Who can try out?
- SAS is open to evaluating elite female athletes ages 10-18 for the year round team and SAS Roots. Athletes should have indoor or beach volleyball experience and be performing at a high level for their age group.
What are you looking for in an athlete? How many players do you take for each age group?
- We don't take a set number of athletes per age group. We take as many or as few athletes per grad year that fit the type of player we are looking for.
- Coaches will evaluate players based on their volleyball fundamentals and overall athleticism, but that is not the whole picture!
- SAS is proud of the culture we have cultivated and want athletes/families who will be a good fit.
- Coaches will also pay attention to:
- Attitude
- Behavior
- Coachability
- Competitiveness
- Communication Skills
- Parent Interactions
- Responsibility
- Sportsmanship
- Team Player
Can I play indoor while playing SAS?
- We strongly advise against this if you join the year round team. Some things to consider include athlete burn out, cost, practice/tournament conflicts and how much volleyball your family can feasibly handle. It sounds like a great idea in October, but gets very challenging in February when travel tournaments start to pick up. There will be no discounts, fee reductions or refunds for missed practices.
What happens if I miss practice?
- SAS is different from the indoor model. We focus on individual training, so the only athlete that is affected if you do not come is YOU. There will be no discounts, fee reductions or refunds for missed practices.
Do I have to play in the tournaments? When are they? How does it work?
- Tournaments are optional, but recommended.
- SAS will send coaches to approximately 4-5 tournaments throughout the season. Some events will only be open to select players.
- Travel/entry fees are not included in the SAS fee.
- For select events, partners will be determined by the club.
- A tentative schedule, along with more details will be sent out to all athletes who are offered a spot on the team.
What if I don't have a partner?
SAS practices are designed for individual training, so you do not need to tryout with a partner in mind.
Is it too late for me to switch to beach volleyball?
No! Let's have a conversation about your goals if you are new to the game!
How will I know if I make the team?
You will receive an offer letter via email if we think you will be a good fit for SAS or SAS Roots.
What if I don't make the team?
Athletes who need more experience will be notified via email and are welcome to join the Beach Club practices at the Great American Center!
I have more questions!
The SAS Parent/Player Handbook will be sent out to all athletes who are offered a roster spot. This will answer a lot of your questions! You can also touch base with Meghan (sas@greatamericanvolleyball.com) to answer additional questions.
